In the United States, there were 4.53 million work-related medically consulted injuries in 2022. OSHA estimates that employers will spend $1 billion per week on direct workers’ compensation, alone. On a global scale, the scale and prevalence of risk and injuries at work continue to grow, especially through heat-related injuries as a result of climate change. The construction industry experiences the largest number of preventable fatal injuries, and the agricultural and textile sectors are also disproportionately affected, particularly through heat stress. 

Today, on the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we reflect on the importance of creating safe, healthy working environments for everyone. Established by the International Labour Organization, this day emphasizes the need to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. The safety of all workers is paramount, and through supply chains, there are a number of interventions that can further promote safety, as they uphold the integrity of production while safeguarding those who are the backbone of the industry.

For example, one of our portfolio companies, CompScience, is exemplary in demonstrating technology solutions to improve worker outcomes. 

CompScience utilizes computer vision technology to identify and prevent safety issues at high-hazard workplaces across the United States. Computer vision is a field of artificial intelligence that enables computers to interpret and understand visual information from the world, such as anticipating potential safety risks in workplaces. By offering real-time monitoring and analysis, this technology helps keep workers safe while respecting their privacy and optimizing operations. In 2022, CompScience’s technology reduced workplace hazards & incidents in participating workplaces by 23%. One client experienced a reduction in 63% of their injury rates over the course of a year, resulting in savings of about 250K per year for that facility.
